The Dixielanders was one of the best places to go in the region 30 years ago. The local comedians Bobby Hooper and Billy Martin established the Dixielanders at the White Mare Pool Hotel in the 1970's, and it was an immediate success. It was quite innovative in its day, though based on a great entertainment tradition. The official opening was quite an event, drawing some top names, such as Wee Georgie Wood. You had to book months in advance and queue for hours to get in. Once the show started people were helpless with laughter  and as Frank Wappet recalls" It  was almost a case of getting an ambulance home instead of a taxi". The Dixielanders has long gone. The Green Public House now stands in its place.
Here is what was said  about the Dixielanders in its heyday:

"Billy Martin and Bobby Hooper are both topline comedians in their own right, but together they produce the perfect formula for the classic comic duo.And their unique Dixielanders show is an evening of sheer joy". .....James Bolam.

...the biggest success story Tyneside night life has seen in years, within minutes of walking on Billy and Bobby have the place in uproar as capacity audiences "rock with laughter"...TV Times

The Dixielanders is a "Geordie phenomenon"....Daily Mail
