Derek Robert Prime was a Wardley Colliery lad who had a talent for sketching local scenes. As a youngster he lived in Waggonway Street. His father, Bobby Prime, was one of seven brothers. Bill, Tot, Bobby, Norman, Les, Jim & Septimus. The brothers had one sister, Sarah Elizabeth (Betty) and most were raise in 13 Second Street during WW1. Sadly, Derek passed away on October 4 1999 at the young age of 51.
The sketches in this gallery are a small proportion of his prolific output. I am grateful to Derek's sister, Norma Sturman for allowing me to reproduce over 40 sketches from her collection. Derek's undoubted talent is evident in the wide variety of local scenes reproduced here. Many are precise records of local collieries and street scenes long gone, and therefore, (I believe) are of some historical significance.
