Jones and Maxwell established Pelaw Brickworks in 1895 and was located  to the east of Wardley Lane. Access to it was by a lane past Thistley House Farm (Gallon's). At one time it had its own branch line to dispatch its loads onto the railway system. By 1911, Jones brothers owned the yard. A headstone at Heworth Cemetery reads, "In loving memory of William, the beloved son of James and Elizabeth Patterson, who was accidentally killed at Pelaw Brick Works. June 12th. 1902. Aged  24 Years".
