Ellison's Shop and Sunderland Terrace (formerly Turnpike Row). The building today is unrecognisable (but still retains the basic shape) and has been converted into a family home It was for sale in 1996 (see left). Jimmy Ellison had the house and shop built on land bought from the Dean and Chapter at Durham for £35 . The family moved here from 20 Station Road, Bill Quay. Elijah Ashman lived in the 'gable end house' on Sunderland Terrace and had a fish and chip shop business on Wardley Lane behind Ellison's. The early Austin motor car in the photograph, was bought for £147  in 1935 and was driven by Susannah. Their daughter Nellie married teacher and councillor, Jack Smith. They had two children Ian and Wendy. Ian retired as a lecturer at Middlesbrough University and went to live in Kelso.
